The Mirandola Institute

Human capability is cultivable.

The Mirandola Institute develops the intellectual foundations, scholarship, institutions, and people needed for human flourishing in the age of artificial intelligence.

The central question

What can human beings become in an age of capable machines?

AI Humanism places human flourishing at the center of the AI age.

Four commitments

AI Humanism

01 · Human Agency

Purpose remains human.

Artificial intelligence should enlarge the domain over which people can form purposes, exercise judgment, make consequential choices, and act.

Delegate execution while preserving human authorship.

02 · Institutional Integrity

Accountability remains coherent.

As work moves across people and machines, institutions must preserve coherent authority, responsibility, and accountability.

Execution can move. Accountability remains.

03 · Knowledge Stewardship

Abundance becomes understanding.

The humanist task is to convert increasingly abundant information and analysis into deeper understanding, broader access to knowledge, and stronger judgment.

Use intelligent machines to expand what humanity knows and deepen humanity’s capacity to understand.

04 · Governed Intelligence

Delegated intelligence remains governable.

Intelligent systems increasingly translate human purposes into action. Their execution should remain connected to clear mandates, meaningful evidence, and the capacity for correction.

Delegated intelligence should remain directed, observable, and revisable.

The intellectual program

From inquiry to human formation

01 · RESEARCH

When does machine capability become human capability?

The Intellectual Agenda develops a research program around capability conversion, agency, institutions, knowledge, and governed intelligence.

02 · FORMATION

What should an educated and capable person understand and do?

Studia Humanitatis develops a contemporary framework for human formation in an age of intelligent machines.

03 · PUBLICATION

A forum for scholarship and serious public inquiry.

HumanitAI develops, tests, criticizes, and extends ideas concerning human capability and intelligent machines.

A signature research problem

The Capability-Conversion Problem

Under what conditions does an increase in machine capability produce a durable increase in human or institutional capability?

Machine capability What an intelligent system can do.
AI-assisted performance What a person or institution can accomplish while using it.
Durable capability What people and institutions become capable of doing because of it.

The humanist project continues.

Artificial intelligence changes the conditions under which humanity develops. Human beings will shape what they become within those conditions.
